When campers and parents arrive to Frontier Ranch this summer, they will be in for an extreme surprise! This spring, the field with all of its holes and dead weeds was replaced with new dirt, gopher wire, and beautiful healthy green sod to give Frontier Ranch a brand new playing field!

Happy St. Patrick's Day from the staff at Mission Springs! Chicago has nothing on us.
The real reason the pool is green at Mission Springs is due to some recent work to the infrastructure of the pool. For the last two weeks the old tired pumps and filters were turned off so that they could be replaced with new ones! Once the new pumps are turned on, the water will turn crystal-clear blue for the enjoyment of all our guests at Mission Springs, even during the heavy summer usage!
Here is a view of the installation of the new filters. |

READY & WAITING!
The site for the new Mission Springs bridge has been ready since November 2007 and we are just waiting for construction contracts to be awarded and crews with equipment to be mobilized. Funding for this project is still on going. Stay tuned for further bridge updates shortly. |

Work has begun on the site where the new bridge will be constructed. The first thing to go was the cabin that was located there. |
|||
A little history about the cabin- It was originally built by Mr. and Mrs. Claus Johnson. Built for the Johnson's family and friends’ use while at the conference center, the cabin was kept in Mr. Johnson’s estate for many years. During a recent visit to Mission Springs, Kathleen Burruel Scantlebury, one of many great-grandchildren of the Johnsons, recounted some memories about the cabin. “It is my understanding, gathered from stories I was told, that my mother, Verlyn Sjoquist Scantlebury (granddaughter of the Johnsons) was about eight when she first went to the Mission Springs area. She said that the cabin was originally just a room and garages downstairs with a platform on top. Later, it was determined a flush toilet should be added. That was done on the platform and looked like an outhouse sitting on top of the cabin. The remaining rooms (the kitchen/sitting area and bedroom) were built around the "outhouse" leaving a nice big porch looking out over the road. Later the porch was turned into the kitchen, a shower was installed, and two decks were built in the back. The cabin was eventually sold back to Mission Springs.” |

The progress on the Mission Springs bridge crisis is moving forward but at a slower-than-expected pace. On May 4th, the existing bridge was re-opened with temporary one-lane access, thus relieving the immediate requirement and continued expense of having three fire fighters and a fire truck stationed on the property. Since that time, the completed proposal and plans to construct the new bridge, located approximately 500 feet north of the Mission Springs RV Park, were submitted to the County of Santa Cruz on May 31st. Prior to the submittal for the building permit, a Riparian Exception is needed from the County. A Riparian Exception is required for grading, land clearing, building, and tree or shrub removal near a river, stream, lake, lagoon, or other natural body of water. On Tuesday, August 7th, we received the long-awaited phone call from the County stating that Mission Springs received the Riparian Exception permit. As good as this is, it’s just one more step closer toward resolving this crisis. The structural engineers and bridge engineers are now completing the working drawings for the new bridge and will submit those plans for the building permit. This process is expected to take approximately four weeks. It is anticipated that the County will then take a minimum of eight weeks to review the plans and issue a building permit. As the weeks go by, we remain hopeful that the County will in fact issue a building permit and that the needed funds will come in. We walk each day by faith that God will provide. Through the continued generosity of our stakeholders, we have received $337,900 as of August 25. Of the amount received, $102,593 was from 27 of our Covenant churches. The total cost related to the existing bridge repairs, emergency access road construction, fire protection requirements and the preliminary numbers of a new bridge is estimated at $980,727.
Thank you for your support of Mission Springs in the past, present and future. We ask that you keep us in your prayers as we seek a resolution to this bridge crisis. If you are able to help us reach our current funding goals and make a contribution to Mission Springs at this time, it would be greatly appreciated. Please contact Bill Walton, Director of Development, for more information on how you can help. |
